    What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy is a one-on-one process between you and a licensed mental health professional. During sessions that typically last 45 to 50 minutes, you work together to identify what is causing distress, understand patterns behind it, and develop practical strategies for change. Unlike group therapy or couples counseling, individual therapy focuses entirely on your needs.

Research consistently supports the effectiveness of individual therapy. A review in Cognitive Therapy and Research found that CBT produced significant improvement in depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD (Hofmann et al., 2012). A meta-analysis by Wampold (2001) found that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is the strongest predictor of positive outcomes across all therapy types.

How long does individual therapy take?

There is no fixed timeline. Some people see meaningful progress in 8 to 12 sessions, especially with structured approaches like CBT. Others benefit from longer-term work when dealing with trauma, personality patterns, or complex grief. Your therapist checks in regularly about progress and adjusts the plan as needed.

    Individual therapy and medication

For moderate to severe depression and anxiety, combining therapy with medication often produces better outcomes than either treatment alone. At Savant Care, therapists and psychiatric providers work on the same team, so coordination is straightforward. If your therapist believes medication could help, they can connect you directly with one of our psychiatrists or psychiatric nurse practitioners.

Between appointments, our journal feedback system keeps your care team connected to how you are doing. You write about what you are experiencing, and a member of your team responds with support and observations. This is not automated. It is a real person who knows your story.

    In-person and telehealth

We offer individual therapy both in-person at our clinic locations across California and Texas, and through secure, HIPAA-compliant video sessions. Research published by HHS has shown that telehealth therapy is comparably effective for depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Whether you prefer meeting face-to-face or from home, the quality of care is the same.

    Common questions about individual therapy

How do I know if I need individual therapy?

If your emotional state is interfering with daily life, relationships, work, or sleep, therapy can help. You do not need a diagnosis to start. Many people begin therapy because they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or want to understand themselves better.

What is the difference between a therapist, psychologist, and psychiatrist?

Therapists (LPCs, LCSWs, LMFTs) hold master's degrees and provide talk therapy. Psychologists (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) provide therapy and may do psychological testing. Psychiatrists (MDs) and psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) can prescribe medication. Savant Care has providers across these disciplines on one integrated team.

How often will I have sessions?

Most patients start with weekly sessions. Your therapist may recommend biweekly or monthly sessions as you progress. Frequency is a collaborative decision between you and your provider.

Can I switch therapists if the fit is not right?

Yes. The therapeutic relationship matters, and not every match works. If you feel your therapist is not the right fit, we will help you transition to another provider on our team.

Is what I say in therapy confidential?

Yes, with limited exceptions required by law: situations involving imminent danger, suspected child or elder abuse, or a court order. Your therapist explains confidentiality limits during your first session.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Research shows that telehealth therapy is comparably effective for most conditions, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Many patients find it more convenient and easier to stay consistent with. Our telehealth platform is HIPAA-compliant and end-to-end encrypted.

What does the first session look like?

Your first appointment is an intake session where your therapist asks about your current concerns, mental health history, and goals. You do not need to have everything figured out. Many patients feel relieved simply from having a structured space to talk.

    Do you accept my insurance?

We accept 22+ insurance plans including Anthem, Blue Shield of California, Aetna, Cigna, Optum/UnitedHealthcare, and Medicare. Call (866) 499-2588 to verify your specific coverage.
