About Dr. Stein
Dr. Barry Stanley Stein brings over 32 years of experience in psychiatry, with a rare combination of an MD, Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology, and a Doctor of Pharmacy. This triple background gives him unusual depth in understanding both the neurological and pharmacological dimensions of mental health treatment.
His approach is patient-centered and collaborative. He takes time to understand each patient's complete picture before recommending a treatment path, and he works with patients as partners in their care.
Dr. Stein completed his medical training at George Washington University, his Ph.D. research at USC and The Salk Institute, and his pharmacy doctorate at UCSF. He holds postdoctoral research credentials from Stanford University School of Medicine.
He has served patients across Northern California at Kaiser Health Centers, UCSF Medical Center, and multiple VA Medical Centers. His experience spans community mental health, academic medicine, and private practice.
How Dr. Stein approaches treatment
Dr. Stein draws on his pharmacology doctorate to take a more precise approach to psychiatric medication than most clinicians can offer. For conditions like bipolar disorder and treatment-resistant depression, this means evaluating drug interactions, metabolic factors, and patient history together before recommending a regimen.
His patients also have access to SavantCare's 1:1 trauma-informed yoga sessions, which he coordinates with their medication plan to support nervous system regulation alongside pharmacological treatment.
